MANAGING BY BOSSING AROUND OR WANDERING ABOUT???

In past the concept of a good leader and a good boss is that of a person who knows how to direct the group of people and the one who knows how to dictate them. Yes! The concept solely describes the term management by bossing around. In old days, especially in public sectors this trend was popular. One person was supposed to lead the whole department. He was supposed to dictate every other employee what to do and what not to? Even in today’s time there are few managers who try to rule over by bossing around and passing orders to their employees. But for MANAGERS, IT’S A RED SIGNAL. With the passage of time the systems developed and people learnt that management is not all about obeying the orders and working day and night in command of your tyrant boss. It’s something more.

With the innovation in field of management, the concept of corporate social culture developed which gave birth to the practice of working in diversified environment. So, now a days as the world turned into a global village, the people from different class, creed, race and nations started working under one roof. Hence the managers could not direct them and boss them by their orders.
So gear up managers!!! There is a need to learn a new concept. Management by wandering about. Do you come in the morning, walk straight to the Manager’s room, sit, turn on your laptop and start checking your emails???
If YES!!! Then STOP!!!
See things the other way. Do you know you subordinates praise you in front of you but unfortunately when they leave your room they tell other pears that your boss has his/her head up in space and they are too rude in attitude too.

How about tables turn and they don’t leave your room anymore? Instead you start leaving their room. The things will go opposite. When you will leave their room, for sure they will tell the other pears that their boss is cooperative and nice to them. Trust me it works and this is called “Management by wandering about”.

Most of the things will remain the same but few things will seem a bit different. In this practice, when you will come to your office, before entering your own office what steps you will follow are as below:
·         Walk around in the office area and while moving ask work progress of your employees yourself, rather than calling them personally in your room.
·         Always criticize while smiling, and after criticizing immediately talk about something of common interest. This will balance your criticism.
·         Critical analysis is even a better way to manage employees than criticizing with smile.
·         If you have a relaxed day and you don’t have to meet any urgent deadlines, sit on desks with your employees, work at their office area and have a nice cup of coffee with them.

·         To find a solution to a problematic situation, adopt practice of brainstorming and group rather than making decisions on own. It has two advantages; first, you won’t be the only one whom everyone will blame. The people will think failure of the task as their group failure. Secondly it will give variety of solutions and brings different ideas on floor to solve problems. So save time and brain.
·         One of the most important things!! Use 360 degrees feedback.
·         Keep on doing healthy, creative practices. For example, changing interior of the cafeteria, taking suggestion from your employees on where to hang the painting or which furniture color should be chosen for new meeting room etc. This will help you to have a friendly relationship with your sub-ordinates resulting in less turnover and more job satisfaction.

·         Throw parties at your place or arrange an unofficial visit to some recreational place. Remember!!! Success comes when you work hard and party harder.

So, in order to apply managing by wandering about strategies you have to set your ego aside first and then come at their level to interact with them. You will see a brilliant change. Your employees will feel more passionate about work, they will show more output and even show willingness to work beyond the working hours. This will enable you to gain more respect, honor and regard amongst your sub-ordinates.
So there is sill no time wasted. Stop acting like a boss and practice MBWA in your organization.
